Review: Espira by Avon*

To start off a brand new year, AVON has released a whole new line of health and wellness products named Espira. It includes various forms of supplements to help you customize what works with your personal lifestyle and needs to boost and promote your natural energy levels and supporting your overall health. They have two areas of focus right now - one which is Boost, the other is Restore. Boost gives you the natural energy kick to help you perform your best while Restore supports your overall health and well-being.

Espira provides essential minerals, vitamins and nutrients to the body and is made from trusted, non-genetically engineered ingredients, does not contain preservatives and has no artificial colours or flavours.

To see which products suit you and what their benefits are - you can refer to this chart that breaks down how the product works for you, what it does as well as what ingredients are inside. What I like as well, is that they also have various recipes on their site to help you get the most out of your protein shake for example.

I was recently sent the Espira Vanilla Plant Power Protein to try and I had it for breakfast. The vanilla taste is subtle and doesn't taste overly artificial. I had it with coconut milk which was a bit overwhelming but with soy or almond milk it was great. It is thick in texture so it filled me up and is a great on the go item especially for when I get back to work.

I'd actually love to try their chocolate one as well as most items on their Boost line - the metabolism boost, hunger block and natural energy - I think these items will really give me the kick for those long days back at work and then mommyhood again in the evenings and afternoon.

Until next time, XO - M

Review: Baby Brezza - Glass One Step Baby Food Maker*

In my journey of being a mother so far, one of the things that made me quite nervous was taking the milestone of feeding my baby solids. I didn't know what the best way of preparing it was, I dreaded how long it would take for me to chop everything up, cook it (steam or boil), then having to take it out, drain it and then puree it with a blender. I didn't necessarily want to make a huge batch and then freeze it if I didn't have to - I personally preferred being able to just cook and make smaller batches each time.

As I was doing my research on some food making alternatives while browsing baby stores, I saw this fancy baby food making machine by Baby Brezza. The one that I was drawn to was the Glass One Step Baby Food Maker, I really liked the fact that it was a class container that was used during the cooking process, and for those of you who are interested in this but would like a cheaper alternative, they do have other options as well.

This specific one, makes up to 4 cups of food and automatically steams and blends your food if you choose to do so. They have a "steam" option, which is just steaming the food. "steam + blend" which does the blending automatically after the food is done steaming, and a "blend" option, to further blend your food to your desired consistency.

I usually keep Ethan's food separately on this cooking board as I like to buy organic fruits and vegetables for him.

Today, I am preparing to make him pureed Apples and Sweet potatoes, so I cut the items up to the sizes mentioned in the booklet that comes with the machine.

I then select the "steam + blend", and since it is for apples, I press it three times (the button is set at 5 minute intervals) and then I press start to begin the cooking process.

One important thing to note is that you should always ensure that the water tank, seen below, is filled with water so that you do not have to worry about refilling it halfway through steaming the product. This machine is pretty good with how much water it uses to steam, as you can see below I was already making a separate batch of food and the water level barely moved at all.

Below you will find pictures of the cooking process, from start to finish

The blending portion is set at 30 seconds, so it really does a good job at breaking down the food to the right consistency at the first go, without having to further blend it some more.

What I truly appreciate about this product is that it has made cooking and preparing food for Ethan to be such a breeze. I can do this a few times a week, the time it takes to cook the food is so minimal and effortless. Even the clean-up is easy! Remove the blade, rinse with soap and water and dry. It honestly does not get much simpler than that. I can just prepare the food, let it do its thing in the machine and not have to watch it at all. I do not have to worry about burning anything, or having to wash different pots, pans and blenders. This is just a convenient, and simplified process.

Do I recommend this product? 100% .. Seriously! If it wasn't for this machine, I honestly would be going crazy with the amount of work and cooking I have to do, because I also cook dinner for my husband and I every night. I recommended this product to every mommy-to-be I know, and also to all my mommy friends. Add this to your registry, or just splurge and buy it! It is such an affordable product that will make your life so much easier.

Baby Brezza has also included different types of recipes on their website and facebook page that you can frequently visit to add some variety and ideas on what to introduce to your baby. As Ethan has just started his solid foods journey, I have yet to really combine many different things together, but for example the recipe below looks so convenient and can be done in 20 minutes!

SQUASH, CORN, TURKEY AND APRICOT PUREE
YIELD: APPROX 1-1/4 CUPS (11oz)

1/3 small butternut squash, peeled and cut into 1/4-inch dice (3/4 cup, 4 ounces)
1/3 cup (3 ounces) raw ground turkey
1/4 cup (1-1/2 ounce) frozen or fresh corn kernels
2 dried apricots (1/2 ounce)

Place squash, turkey, corn and apricots in machine and steam for 20 minutes.
Puree to smooth (45 seconds).

Steam in: 1/4 teaspoon minced fresh sage.
Stir in: 1/4 – 1/2 cup plain yogurt, water, breast milk or formula.
Obviously, you can tailor it to your preference, like if you do not want to steam in fresh sage, the choice is completely up to you! Once done, you can either do what I did above, and put it in a glass container for immediate use, or you can put them in their food storage pouches and take them on the go for baby to use. Best part, it's reusable so gone are the days of always buying these food pouches only to toss them out right after. Their pouches are BPA-Free, dishwasher and freezer-safe and can hold up to 7oz of food - it also comes with a wide funnel so that the food can easily be transferred into the pouch.

I have done a pretty thorough video demonstrating this machine on my Instastories! I hope you can see it via the link ~ if not, you can go to my Instagram Page and it is saved in the Baby E categories section - you just have to be patient and scroll a bit because I have a few pictures and clips of him from months ago!

I hope you'll visit my Instagram soon as I plan to be able to give Ethan the homemade food pouches that he can suck from himself in the next few weeks so that I won't have to spoon feed him at restaurants anymore! When that happens, I will for post it on my instagram page!

Until next time, XO - M.

Healthy Snacking with Prana Organics*

Happy New Year everyone!!! May your 2016 be better than ever, and I wish you all good health and prosperity! To kick off 2016, I thought that I should talk about something that is probably on a majority of people's New Years Resolution list - that is "being healthier/having a healthier lifestyle, etc". I was recently sent some yummy snacks to try from Prana Organic, and to be honest, I've never tried coconut chips before. I love coconut, but always in the sweet variety vs. the savory. I never knew what to expect, and never gravitated towards it, however - keep reading to see my thoughts on the products.

First, a little about Prana Biovegan Inc. They are an importer and manufacturer of organic nuts, seeds, dried fruits and snacks from Quebec (YAY CANADIAN PRODUCTS! - you know I'm all about that Canadian love!). This line of crunchy and tasty coconut chips is available in four flavors: Spicy Chilli, BBQ, Salt & Pepper, and Original. These are 100% organic, gluten-free, with no cholesterol, and offer an excellent source of fibre. Coconut slices are dry roasted to perfection and seasoned with ingredients from around the world. If you do not fancy the savory flavors, you can always just go for the original and you can still get that delicious crunch that is a way healthier alternative to potato chips.

Prana Organic Dry Roasted Coconut Chips are available in 100g bags, in the four flavors mentioned above. The suggested MSRP is $3.99 per bag (which honestly isn't bad - bags of chips go for at least $2.99 now, and at least with this you know you are getting quality products) and can be found at all major grocery chains, health food stores, and supermarkets with healthy living aisles across Canada, starting back in October 2015

I thought I'd take a picture of the back of the packaging to show all of you the actual ingredients and nutrition content.

As you can see - it is 80 calories per 1/4 cup (for the Sea Salt flavor). As a comparison, (information taken from a common chip brand's site - 16 chips equates to 180 calories with 16 grams of fat for the original flavor).... therefore, you do the math.

I find that often, the craving and urge to eat chips, really derives from my need of a salty and crunchy snack. This did it for me. My husband's favorite flavor is Chili, and I like the original :)

Image below shows the Ingredients - simple, easy to read and understand. You know what's going into your body.

DenTek: "Teeth's Worst Nightmare" event recap

A little over a week ago, I was invited to attend a dinner hosted by Dentek. The theme was "Teeth's Worst Nightmares" - as you can guess, everything we had was stuff that would get stuck in your teeth: corn on the cob, ribs, candies and they even had food that would give you horrible breath! I like to call super garlic-y breath "internal death" - it seems to radiate from within and never ever leaves you. You stink, and people won't want to talk to you. Gross, I know! However, I love the idea of this event! After all the deliciousness, we were sent home with a goody bag filled with toothbrushes, floss, toothpicks and these little tiny micro picks with brush ends that really help to get all the gunk and plaque build up removed from between your teeth.

Comeon! How cute is this display?? The little animals are toothbrush holders

These are the little brushes I'm talking about. Ever since I was introduced to these, I've been using them everyday and I love it. I really don't like floss that much, and this has been great for me.

Finally, I must include a pic of my delicious dinner :)  heh..

Thanks to Dentek and OverCat PR for inviting me to this event! It was so much fun!

Until next time, XO - M.

VEGAN PURE All In One Demo & Review*

I recently had the opportunity to try out a protein shake called Vegan Pure All In One, and with my new motivation to try to live a more balanced and active lifestyle, I thought this could really jump start my change. I had tried plant-based protein shakes before, and the only way I could describe it, was "swamp water". I'm not sure if you know what I'm talking about, but its pretty famous, a competitor of this brand and is berry tasting. It also came in a natural unflavored scent, but that REALLY was like swamp water.

ENOUGH BABBLING... when I saw this plant-based protein shake that is said to be silky smooth and has a great vanilla taste, I decided I had to go for it. A bit of info about them - Vegan Pure was developed using a holistic approach by combining meaningful quantities of health promoting ingredients with 100% all natural vegan flavors obtained from real cocoa, vanilla beans and berries. It contains a lot of nutrients, fiber, protein and antioxidants - perfectly incorporated into a shake you can take with you..

Here's some key points from their website that really stood out to me and helped me grasp exactly what I was getting when I was drinking 1 serving of the shake. To see all the other facts, just click the link in the beginning of this sentence.
- 1 serving of Vegan Pure is 50% of your daily intake of vitamins and minerals.
- every serving delivers 16 grams of protein (same as 3 eggs), 4 grams of fiber (same as an apple), 2 servings of greens (same as 2 servings of kale), 1.5 grams of Omega 3 (same as 2.3 servings of salmon) and 1 billion probiotics (same as a cup of yogurt).

This product is available for purchase at Walmart Canada for $19.97, which is an amazing price, considering competitive brands sell them for around $39.99 for the same quantity.

Alright, so let's talk flavor and side effects - two very important points to discuss and is probably in most of your minds. Like I said previously, it doesn't taste like swamp water, considering it has broccoli powder, kale powder and spinach powder. The natural vanilla flavor really helps to balance out the flavors. I find it a tad sweet, however it is tolerable. I actually really like this post work-out as it fills me up, without having to consume a meal. I don't know about you, but after I work out, I'm hungry, but I don't actually feel like eating anything heavy so gravitating to this is actually good, it works for me. I am very interested in trying the chocolate flavor after I'm done this vanilla one.

Side effects - there are none, I don't get an upset stomach or anything from it. yay :) As you can see from the pic below, it is quite creamy even though you mix it with watery. It is opaque in color and doesn't taste watery and weak.

Overall, I am a fan of this product and I will definitely be repurchasing this when I'm done!

Until next time, XO - M.

14 Day Skinny TeaTox Review

This is my first review from BrandBacker, and I must have to say, I love the concept. When you apply for BrandBacker, you have access to try out products when posted on the site. You apply for the campaign/product you would like to review and wait to hear back if you have been accepted. Afterwards, the product is sent to you and you have a specific amount of days to review and post your thoughts about the product.

Moving on, as part of my decision to live a healthier and balanced lifestyle, eating cleaner, exercising etc. I decided to give Skinny Teatox* a try..

I received 1 pack of the 14 Day evening Tea, which contains 7 packets, you are supposed to drink that every other day as it is a stronger, more potent version. A packet of the 14 Day Morning tea and a cute strawberry silicone tea infuser.

First off, it comes with a very detailed disclaimer pamphlet, advising you of the side effects with the Nutrition Facts of the product. There is also a section of the pamphlet that tells you what types of foods you should be eating/avoiding when drinking this tea which you may find helpful and an overall benefit to living a healthier lifestyle.

I decided to use my cute little mug to test out my tea :)

My thoughts:
This tea is POTENT and it is STRONG. What I mean is that on the first day of trying this, I had pizza, and boy did this tea punish me. The tea contains a natural laxative, so it was essentially telling me "Hey Miranda, I'm getting rid of this CRAP you just ingested, so let me send you to the washroom". It was not a good start to trying out this new product.

This tea makes sure thst you know what you are doing, and to be mindful of what you are actually ingesting or else your body isn't going to like you too much. I can really see how this works, and how this encourages you to eat healthier. The tea tastes great, it doesn't taste too woodsy or herbally and making sure you don't oversteep it, can also help lessen the potency or strength of the product.

I will continue to try this product out, and see where it takes me in a few months when combined with exercise. I am already eating healthier, so the effects aren't as harsh as before. Like I said, the cleaner you eat, and the cleaner your digestive system is, the less likely you will need to make a run for the washroom! This is a great product to incorporate into your life no matter whether you want to be a bit less bloated before an event, or clean up your eating habits.

Have you tried a detox tea before? What are your thoughts?

Until next time, XO - M.

Tea on a Rainy Day

This week has been a food week, and while it's super cold, damp and wet in Toronto I wanted to share with you all my favorite tea from Davids Tea. Mint to Be, can it get anymore perfect than this? The name is super cute and I love that it has the benefits of a good mint tea - not too overwhelming, but I find that it's more like a vanilla note vs. coconut.

I drink it black, and it's my tea of choice. I love to sip on it during the winter and colder seasons and it just warms me from within.

FYI - Davids Tea is currently doing some web specials/clearance - you're looking at a good 40-50% off teas, mugs, tumblers all from the Christmas collection.

Check it out! What are some of your favorite teas? Let me know!

XO, M.

Tips on beating the cold or flu

If you're like me, you will notice that everyone around you seems to be coughing, sneezing or sniffling. Whether you have been sick yourself or the people around you are full of the germs, it can definitely be an awful feeling. I think the worse has to be when taking any sort of public transportation, and the strangers around you that you are packed like sardines with, are spreading the germs that you know you cannot avoid for the life of you!

Here are some things I have done whenever I feel sick to help get me out of that funk. I have also included a makeup look for those of you who are still feeling under the weather, but have to either go out or to work, and you don't want to look like a zombie and put yourself together a bit better.

1. Staying hydrated with tea, water or honey.

My definite go to's are David's Tea - Organic Cold 911. It contains eucalyptus, peppermint, apple, juniper berries and a hint of orange flavoring. This tea is marked in their "cold fighting tea" section and I live by it. It is rather strong with the eucalyptus and peppermint, so if you are not used to it, I'd suggest a smaller amount of tea for your first cup to see how you would like to adjust the strength of flavoring. This almost reminds me of vicks, it opens up your clogged sinuses and just feels so good.

Next, if you have more of a sore throat, I'd recommend Bravissimo. It has licorice root, rosehips, chamomile, orange peel, goji berries, and peppermint. Notice that this and the Organic Cold 911 both have peppermint? It really helps clear the stuffy feeling you have. The chamomile is relaxing and often I drink pure chamomile tea if I want to unwind, or even if my stomach is acting up.

Echinicea Tea is a staple, you can get it at any health food store or grocery store. Echinicea is an herb that is commonly used to fight infections like the first sign of a cold, or shorten the duration of upper respiratory infections. I find that Echinicea is best taken when you feel that scratch or discomfort in your throat in attempt to surpress the potential of a full blown infection.

Honey is a great option. I have been taught that if you get a good quality Manuka Honey, just ingesting a small teaspoon of pure Manuka Honey can help with any throat discomfort. I didn't have any Manuka Honey with me this time, but I tried this before at my parents and it really helps!

Finally, what has really helped my husband and I this flu season (we were both out with a cold, his was for a bit over a week, mine was for 3..yes, 3 weeks). was the Citron Tea. You can typically find this at asian grocery stores or for those of you in Toronto, those Chinese Medicinal stores at Pacific Mall or Market Village. The Citron Tea is made from honey and Yuzu. You combine 1-2 tablespoons with hot water and sip. It's best if you eat the peel too. It's sliced really thinly so it won't be bitter. I forgot about Citron Tea til my husband got sick, and I bought a jar and we went through one who one and opened a second one. It really helped me out, soother my throat and boosted that vit. C.

Obviously, if you have a giant mug to hold that liquid in, the better it is so you can just sit back with your blankey and not have to worry about getting up constantly to refill your cup.

2. Take your Vitamins!

3. Avoid spicy or deep fried foods that can aggravate your throat.

4. Rest. I am so guilty of this, I will even try to go to work, until I finally get sent home because my coworkers want to avoid me like the plague. There is nothing better for you then getting LOTS of rest.
______________________________________________________

Alright...onto the "look" potion of this post. While I understand that alot of you will think it's crazy to even attempt to put any makeup on while you're sick, sometimes you just have to. For example, those days when you already took 5 days off work, yet you're still not feeling 100% better but you gotta go back in and want to avoid looking completely ghastly, here's a few simple things you can do.

I included a picture below from last week, when I was ill, my before and after. VERY subtle differences, but I just threw on some tinted moisturizer to give me some color to my pale sickly complexion, a good salmon colored concealer to hide the blueish panda eyebags, and some mascara and a cream blush and some gloss. No eyeliner, no contouring, no bronzer and definitely no eyeshadows or fanciness. This is honestly just a bit of oomph to help you look a bit more put together.
left: before / right: after
as you can see, very subtle changes

Left: Estee Lauder Sheer Tint Release moisturizer - I have only been able to find this at The Bay and not at Sephora. I found out about this product from watching PixiWoo's videos on YouTube. This is a tinted moisturizer that comes in a greyish white color, when you rub it it feels like kinda grainy, but those are actually the self-adjusting color beads. You can apply this with your fingers, however I use the Real Techniques Expert Face Brush. It self-adjusts to your skin tone and more, it gives you a slight glow and it's great. However, I would not recommend this to those of you who have really fair porcelain skin as it MAY come out orange toned on you. I'd say on a MAC scale, NC/NW 20+ is fine. You can always return the product though if it doesnt work for you, according to the sales girls at The Bay.

If you have those pesky panda dark eye circles, I'd recommend taking a good orange/salmon toned concealer and putting it on - that will counter your dark circles! I recommend the SKIN FOOD Salmon Darkcircle Concealer.

Finally, here's a picture of the makeup I used on my face. A cream blush (soft natural look), a good curling mascara, the MAC shadow was what I used to fill my brows in a bit, and the left circular container is the Laura Mercier brightening powder that I used for setting my undereye concealer. Top it off with a light pink gloss or lipchap and you're good to go.

This look took me about 5-8 minutes to complete. Quick and Simple!

I hope all of these tips help you out or give you some ideas :)

Until next time, XO - M!

Holiday Gift Idea no.1 - SOMA hot chocolate

As December is officially upon us, I thought that I would start a 4 part Gift Giving series, I'd like to point out that all four ideas are from Canadian Companies, which I absolutely love! Gotta support our Canadian businesses - big or small!

First idea comes from the thought of gifting that special someone a luxurious sweet treat that you know that they may not buy to spoil themselves. We're talking about luxury premium hot chocolate from Soma Chocolate. They have two locations in Toronto - Distillery District and one on King Street they roast the cocoa beans themselves, then refine them and make a medley of deliciousness.

Some of the items include: truffles, gelato, cookies, toffee, spreads and of course, hot chocolate. They also make gift baskets for convenience if required. Here'a list of all the items they have in their store including big batches and individual items.

I believe that the hot chocolate 4 pack "elixir collection" is approx $25 and each silver pack will make a few cups each (i guess depending on how chocolaty you like it).  My coworker also told me to try "dark side of the mug" - that is a big bag of chocolate I believe about $10-15 and definitely makes at least 10 cups or more (again, depending on how much chocolate you use). The "dark side of the mug" is absolutely heavenly - it contains dark chocolate, cane sugar and a hint of madagascar vanilla. I boil the milk on the stovetop and pour it into my mug with the chocolate inside and top with some whip cream... mmm.. perfect for the winters I say!
Definitely take a look at this gift - if you know someone with a sweet tooth and you want to spoil them with something a bit fancier, I think this is a perfect treat! You can always include a mug in a gift bag as well and it'll be all ready for the receiver to enjoy!

XO - Miranda.
